Laiyang is located in the middle of Shandong Peninsula, bordering Haiyang on the east, Laixi on the west, Qixia and Zhaoyuan on the north and Jimo on the south.

In the middle of Shandong peninsula, Laiyang lies in middle of Lanyan railway (from Lanzhou to Yantai) between the longitudes of 120°31'E and 129°58'E, the latitudes of 36°34'lO" N and 37°10'. It borders Haiyang on the east, Laixi on the west, Qixia and Zhaoyuan on the north and Jimo on the south. 

In Ming Dynasty, Laiyang governed 14 towns which contained 135 villages. In 1735, the three towns in the east of Laiyang were transfered to Haiyang. By the end of 2001, Laiyang governed 4 street offices, 1 economic and technical development zone, 14 towns and 184 administrative villages.

In 2003, the population of Laiyang hit 887,220 with 454,068 males and 433,152 females. Averagely, there were 512 persons per square kilometers. The natural population growth rate was -1.82¡ë. There were 29 identified nationalities including the Han nationality.

The park construction is the most active part promoting economic development. Regarding infrastructure, an accumulative 130,000,000-yuan has been invested in the Export-oriented Industrial Park, Foodstuff Industrial Park and Tuanwang Industrial Park for the construction of roads, water, electricity, communication,greening, lighting etc. An area of 16 square kilometers has been developed and 7.3 square......

In 2003, the schools in Laiyang numbered 203, with enrolled students of 121,000. Among the 203 schools, there are 147 primary schools with 38,000 students, 44 middle schools with 64,000 students, 8 high schools with 15,000 students and 2 vocational schools with 3,200 students. The teaching staff in the whole educational system totaled 8,800. 

The income of the urban and rural residents has been increasing steadily. In 2003, the net income per peasant hit 3,876 yuan with an increase of 7.6%. The per capita governable income urban residents reached 8,537.4 yuan, increased by 6%. The government increased input in education, improving school conditions; strengthened health administration in rural areas, improving medical conditions; speeded up the net construction for CATV and cable casting.
