Laiyang Chi Pear, which is generally called Liayang Pear, is one of the traditional rare species of Shandong pears.
The Pear, well known home and abroad, is a local specialty of Laiyang. Researches show that, Laiyang Chi Pear is a unique local variety that resulted from years' efforts of the local farmers. The Pear has a history of over 400 years. There are even old pear trees of over 300 years that grow sturdily, each with a yield of some 500kg.
In the family of pears, Laiyang Chi Pear is of the top grade. It is big, smells nice and tastes good. The sugar content is some 8.5% and acid content is only 0.113%. It also has medical functions of clearing lung, eliminating phlegm and relieving cough. Products include pear syrup, preserved pears, dried pears and canned pears, which are warmly welcomed by consumbers. The pear trees are mainly located along Wulong River and its branches. All the above conditions are favorable for pear planting. However, in the long planting history of Laiyang Chi Pear, the development of the pear was fairly low. Take the year 1949 for instance, there were only 300 hectares of pear planting area with an annual yield of 800,000 kg. Since the 1950s, the local government has attached great importance to the development of Laiyang Pear. The local government has enhanced both the planting and management of the pear trees. Planting areas and the yield have been increased continuously. Besides the sales in the domestic market, pears of Laiyang have been also exported to foreign countries such as Japan, Singapore and Canada. |
