Natural environment
Located in the middle of Shandong Peninsula, Laiyang is well known for its pears. Laiyang lies between Yantai, Qingdao, Weihai and Weifang, covering a total area of
1731.54 million square meters among which, the
urban area occupies 20 million square meters and the plough area reaches 80,000 hectares. The population for the whole city totals 900,000, among which 250,000 live in the city proper. Laiyang governs 18 counties and 1 provincial economic & technical development zone
Laiyang is in the temperate continental climate zone which features four seasons and abundant sunlight. Laiyang teems with vegetables, fruits and marine products, among which Laiyang Pear, Laihu Ginseng, Shandong Peanut are well known at home and abroad. The rich mineral resources are widely distributed in Laiyang, with the majorities going to nonmetallic minerals such as graphite, phosphorus, marble, limestone, potassium feldspar and zeolite.
Location advantage
Laiyang lies in the middle of Shandong Peninsula, facing Liaodong Peninsula, Korean Peninsula and the Japanese islands across the sea. It is 120 kilometers long from east to west, and it is 90 nautical miles away from Dalian.
Laiyang boasts advanced transportation, with 7 state and provincial highways running through such as Tongsan (Tongjiang to Sanya) Expressway, Weilai Expressway (Weifang to Laiyang), Qingwei (Qingdao to Weihai) Expressway, Yanqing (Yantai to Qingdao) Expressway and so on. The railway line from Lancun to Yantai goes through Laiyang from east to west and connects the national railway net. The city proper is 90-100 kilometers away from Qingdao Port, Qingdao Airport, Yantai Port and Yantai Airport. Yantai and Qingdao have flights to main domestic cities and some foreign countries. The superior geographic location and the advanced transportation net help Laiyang to be a transportation joint and an important commodity distributing center in Shandong Peninsula.
Basic guarantee
Laiyang abounds in fresh water and the capacity of two reservoirs totals 260 million cubic meters. Every day, the two reservoirs can provide 80,000 tons of water that can service a city with a population of 300,000. Laiyang has a large scale sewage plant which can treat more than 60,000 tons of sewage every day.
Laiyang has one 220-kv transformer substation, 4 110-kv ones and 12 35-kv ones, which can provide electricity of 800 million kilowatt-hours.
A modern communication network has been set up and it extends to more than 140 countries and regions. The post net extends to 220 countries and regions.
The 26 hospitals and medical organs are well equipped and they can provide fine medical services.
The education of Laiyang has been developing quickly, with 7 colleges such as Laiyang Agricultural College, and nine technical schools.
Industrial foundation
Laiyang boasts a sound industrial foundation and the export-oriented economy is developing quickly. It ranks 94 among top 100 counties in China and 26 among top 30 counties in Shandong. In 2003, GDP for the whole city hit 10.9 billion yuan and the financial income was close to 400 million yuan. The foreign enterprises in Laiyang number 400 and their investment exceeds 800 million yuan.
After years of development, Laiyang has formed its own industrial system. With regard to food processing, there are over 300 food processing companies whose employees outnumber 80,000, among whom there are 20,000 senior
technical personnel. The brands of Longda, Luhua and Tianfu are well known in China. More than 200 kinds of food have entered Japan, South Korea,
Europe, America, Russia etc. In Japan, many products of Laiyang are inspection free. As to machinery processing, there are some 50 enterprises involved in machinery processing with a staff of over 60,000.
Park construction
Laiyang Economic & Technical Development Zone is a provincial zone, near Yanqing (Yantai to Qingdao) Expressway. The layout area totals 100 square kilometers. In order to provide the economic development with an ideal environment and a fine carrier, the government set up an export-oriented industrial park and a food park in the development zone in 2001. The export-oriented industrial park is in the west with a
total layout area of 79 million square meters, focusing on machinery, chemistry, textile, costume and new
construction materials. The food park lies in the east of the development, with a layout area of 21 million square meters. The parks are well equipped and can meet the development demands of the enterprises. By Dec. of 2003, 150 projects had entered the parks with the investment totaling 6.5 billion
